3 Day Juice Cleanse

About 4 years ago I was going to school for a kinesiology degree with the intent of becoming a personal trainer and nutritionalist.  Though that is not the same path that I am on today, health and fitness still have a special place in my heart.

fatsickandnearlydeadIn my classes we watched tons of documentaries, which I sometimes find myself rewatching on Netflix as background noise while I’m working.  One documentary in particular that I really enjoyed was “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead,” which you can actually watch on the internet for free, here. In the film, Joe Cross, an obese man loaded up on steroids and suffering from a debilitating autoimmune disease, goes on an all fruit & vegetable juice diet to loose weight and get healthy.  I don’t mean to spoil the ending for you, but he loses the weight and was able to get off all of the prescription drugs that he was taking!

I think it may have been a day or two after watching the documentary for the first time that I bought my juicer… a Breville Juice Fountain Plus.

I probably juiced everyday for two weeks after getting the juicer, but I’m not going to lie, it’s A LOT of work!  After that, the juicing became less frequent and my juicer found a home on top of the fridge where it has lived for a solid 4 months without use now.

WELL, that is about to change!  I’m taking inspiration from Joe Cross and starting a 3 day juice cleanse.  I know I’m not obese and I’m not taking any medication, but a juice cleanse can still have an array of benefits for an already healthy adult.

Though weight loss will likely be a side effect of a short term juice cleanse, it shouldn’t be the main goal.  The weight you lose in the first few days will be mostly water weight and you will likely gain it back when you begin introducing solid food into your diet again.  Here are some of the attainable goals of a short term juice cleanse:

  • Rest the stomach
  • Repair the gut
  • Rest the liver
  • Reduce appetite
  • Ease food decision making
  • Improve energy
  • Rehydrate the body
  • Detoxify

My personal goal for this juice cleanse is to reset my pallet so that I can make healthier choices while eating.  I am currently a vegetarian, but it is a personal goal to work my way to a mostly vegan diet.  Cheese has been the hardest food group (yes I consider it a whole food group!) to eliminate from my diet, so I need the extra help!

Juice Cleanse Calendar: Slide8

Shopping List:

  • 9 Medium Apples
  • 8 Cucumbers
  • 8 stalks Celery
  • 1 cup Blueberries
  • 2 cups Grapes
  • 1 box Spinach
  • Small bag Kale
  • 6” Ginger
  • 9 Medium Carrots
  • 5 Beets
  • 6 Lemons
  • 8 cups Pineapple
  • 2 Oranges
  • 3 Large Tomatoes
  • 2 cups Coconut Water
  • 1 Cup Aloe Vera Juice
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Black Pepper or Black Pepper Essential Oil
  • Pink Himalayan

I will also be buying some extra fruits and vegetables to eat whole (limiting fruits because of the sugar). Nutrients in juice form are easily and quickly absorbed by the body, which is why juice will be the main source of nutrients over the three day period, but it doesn’t have to be the only source. A juice cleanse isn’t about starving yourself, it’s about fueling your body with all the good stuff and giving your body time to eliminate all the bad stuff you’ve been building up!

Update: Results

Hey guys, I’m back with the results of my juice cleanse!

I’m not going to call it a failure, but I will say that I didn’t exactly stick to the plan.  On Thursday Night I was starting to feel sick, but after diffusing my killer flu blend, I felt a lot better on Friday morning.  I made my way to the store, bought all the supplies (which came out to around $60) and made my first juice.  It was delicious, but it took me all day to drink… it was A LOT of juice.  So by the evening I made my second juice and finished out the day at the bowling alley with my juice.  At the end of day 1 I felt fine.  A little hungry, but not ravenous.

Day 2 was a bit worse.  I woke up feeling under the weather and it took me awhile to get out of bed.  When I did finally get up, I started the day (at about 12pm) with a juice and it was probably the best juice I’ve ever had in my life (pineapple- orange, yes please!).  I spent most of the day drifting in and out of sleep, half from sickness and half from hunger.  I made a second juice later in the evening, but it was not good (Saturday PM juice)… I think I used way too much ginger!  At that point I broke down and had some mashed potatoes for dinner.

Day 3 I planned a hiking trip and that was a BIG mistake! I’m not sure how I though I was going to make it up the mountain with a cold and little solid food to keep me going.  I did make a pineapple-orange smoothie and had a banana, which helped a little.  After hiking I had another berry protein smoothie, took a quick nap, then went about the rest of my day. For dinner I had more mashed potatoes and a couple onion rings (it was a special occasion, so I had to indulge! (;)

Overall, I didn’t feel much different. I was still craving pasta and cheesy foods… not vegetables. For a few days after the cleanse, I did refrain from the less healthy foods and mostly ate vegetables and grains, but I slid back into my normal eating habits over the next 2 weeks.  Cheese really is addicting, kind of like drugs (watch this short video) and I would have needed to have a much longer cleanse to kick the addiction, but paired with a cold, it just wasn’t something I was ready for at this time.  Maybe I will try again later, but for now I will just continue to plan out some cheese-less meals each week and cut down where I can!
